The main cause of learning disabilities is suspected to be neurological. In most cases, the exact reason for the disability is unknown; even though, in some cases it is known that a hereditary factor or pre-natal, post-natal, or infant distress have played a role in causing the disability. It is known, however, that learning disabilities are not caused by environmental factors (e.g., difficult financial situation, problematic or inadequate instruction, or emotional problems), even though environmental factors can exacerbate the influence of the learning disabilities.
