How to identify if your child may have a learning disability?  

The recommendations are given by Nitzan with the consultation of Dr. Mical Shani of the Division of Learning Disabilities at the University of Haifa.


Kindergarten

Language and Thinking

  • problems with pronunciation
  • slow development of vocabulary
  • difficulty rhyming
  • lack of interest in listening to stories
  • difficulty in remembering names, colors, numbers, and letters
  • excessive use of "filler words" e.g., "like", "you know", "uhh"
  • disorganized expression
  • difficulty constructing correct sentences

Math

· difficulty grasping the concept of amount

· difficulty in preserving amount

· difficulty counting in increasing or decreasing order

· difficulty in sorting according to size

· difficulty in naming and writing numbers

Attention and Concentration

  • extreme over-activity
  • pronounced low attention span in relation to peer group
  • lack of continuation and concluding of tasks
  • drastic changes in mood
  • poor coping with failure

Visual-Motor Area

  • difficulty performing games in which one must discern between individual items or between a focus object and its background
  • difficulty in fine motor skills (e.g., closing buttons or tying shoes)
  • motor awkwardness (e.g., falling and dropping objects)
  • avoidance of activities like drawing, coloring, and cutting

Behavioral-Social Area

  • difficulty making social connections, understanding social situations, and accepting rules of games and working in groups

Elementary Grades 1st - 4th

Reading and Writing

  • primarily- avoidance of reading and difficulty learning the relationship between consonants and vowels and their sounds
  • difficulty completing incomplete words
  • reading mistakes
  • slow reading
  • extraordinary reading mistakes in type and amount

Math

  • calculation errors (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • difficulty in addition and subtraction in columns
  • difficulty in multiplication in columns
  • lack of understanding of the relationship between a math equation and its calculation

Language and Thinking

  • use of short and grammatically incorrect sentences
  • poor vocabulary
  • difficulty in verbal expression

Visual-Motor Area

  • non-relaxed grasping of pencil or under/over pressure exerted on the pencil
  • difficulty forming letters and organizing written material on the paper (illegible writing)
  • slowness in performing exercise or sport-related tasks
  • slowness in performing tasks requiring fine motor skills (e.g., sketching and drawing)

5th - 8th grades

Reading and Writing

  • reading mistakes
  • slowness in reading and writing
  • avoidance of reading out loud
  • difficulty in written expression (the feeling that the child is not able to express his opinions, thoughts, and ideas exactly
  • difficulty mastering reading and writing in a foreign language
  • numerous spelling mistakes

Visual-Motor Area

  • illegible writing
  • difficulty grasping pencil or pen
  • lack of desire to write
  • difficulty getting organized (e.g., organizing learning materials, organizing time, etc...)

High School

Reading and Writing

  • pronounced difference in level between written and verbal expression - with verbal expression being the better
  • difficulty in independent learning
  • significant fall in learning achievements in contrast to previous years

Language and Thinking

  • faulty interpretation of information
  • inability to use together knowledge gained from different texts
  • difficulty grasping abstract ideas and in expressing them
  • difficulty applying effective learning strategies
  • difficulty remembering material learned for exams despite prior preparation

Memory/Attention and Focus

  • difficulty absorbing material in class (empty notebooks)
  • easily becomes tired
  • difficulty in perseverance in performing assignments
  • exaggerated or lack of attention given to details
  • lack of attention given to small details

Visual-Motor Area

  • slow working
  • awkward
  • lack of success or awkwardness in performing sport-related tasks, for example, swimming, riding a bike, shooting basketball
