June 2008 Smith Report Highlights
- 75% of parents know at least one child or adult who has a learning disability or ADD/ADHD.
- Half of these parents believe that the chances of these children to succeed in their studies are less than children without a learning disability.
- Similar to the survey that was conducted in July 2007, in approximately 1/3 of the fathers' homes there is at least one child with a learning disability or ADD/ADHD.
- 50% of the parents had taken children to be tested for a learning disability, while in 2/3 of these cases a learning disability or ADD/ADHD was found.
- Similar to the previous survey, 40% of the parents feel they are lacking the necessary tools to deal with these problems, especially didactic tools.
School Assistance:
- Only 1/3 of parents of children with a learning disability or ADD/ADHD noted that the school helps their child deal with his/her learning difficulties.
- In addition, in 2/3 of the cases, the school does not give an explanation to the child or the parent on the meaning of the problem.
- Children with learning disabilities and/or ADD/ADHD develop more emotional and social problems.
