Computer Literacy Skills

 Computer Literacy Project

484_1622For the first time in Israel a program has been devised so as to train children and teach them computer skills. This program has been tailored specifically for children with learning disabilities, and it is an outcome of collaboration with LEV OHEV (meaning in Hebrew loving heart) alongside with BEZEQ, the company contributing to its execution.

Program Aims

  • Acquainting children with basic and more advanced applications which require computer skills.
  • Turning the personal computer as an essential and convenient aids to learning.
  • Introducing the computer as an accompaniment to leisure activity.

Program Rational

Computer literacy is defined as the knowledge and ability to use computers and related technology efficiently, with a range of skills covering levels from elementary use to programming and advanced problem solving. Computer literacy can also refer to the comfort level someone has with using computer programs and other applications that are associated with computers. Another valuable component of computer literacy is knowing how computers work and operate.
The precise definition of "computer literacy" can vary from group to group. Generally, literate connotes one who can read text in his or her native language, looking up new words if necessary. Likewise, an experienced computer person can manage with a range of basic tasks encountered upon using a personal computer. Since the usage of computers nowadays touches upon every facet of life, it is only natural that children with learning disabilities can bridge whatever gap that might deter them from making full usage of them.

Technological developments can now facilitate the road to learning computer usage. There are many sites that can assist children with learning disabilities, at times compensating them for some tools which are difficult for them to use.
Nitzan association has, for a long time, set the awareness to computer literacy as a major strategic target, with the aim of "accessibility to all", that is, to children with learning disabilities. Naturally, the aim has been to turn the personal computer into a tool that is regularly used, both at home and at school. In Nitzan we are convinced that - with the aid of c the personal computer - children can improve their reading and writing skills. They are in a better position to organize various documents, such as reports that are submitted in class to their teachers.
